GLOSSARY / Firewall
What is Firewall?
A device or software that filters network traffic based on security rules.
Firewalls enforce allow/deny policies between network zones. Next-generation firewalls add application awareness, intrusion prevention, and TLS inspection; web application firewalls (WAF) specifically protect web apps.
They are a foundational, but not sufficient, control.
